Louis Armstrong - The Best of the Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings

Not many people knew about jazz improvisation until these historic numbers were recorded in the late 1920s! Hear the brilliant horn and scat singing that made Armstrong a star on West End Blues; Heebie Jeebies and Muggles.
Marquis Hill - The Way We Play

On The Way We Play, Hill fronts his regular ensemble of four years, the Blacktet, which consists of alto saxophonist Christopher McBride, vibraphonist Justin Thomas, drummer Makaya McCraven, and bassist Joshua Ramos. It’s a smart tactic because it plays to the strengths of Hill as a bandleader and affords the music a vivacious group accord that often comes from years of playing together. Hill, however, flips the scripts on the new disc. Instead of offering entirely original material as he did on his last three discs, he revisits a handful of jazz standards. "I want to pay homage to some of my favorite jazz standards and American songbook classics,” Hill says. "These are some of the songs that I came up playing in various jam sessions; these songs really taught me how to play jazz.”
The Fat Babies - Solid Gassuh

18th & Racine (Delmark 255) was the name of the previous Fat Babies album and it's also the location of Honky Tonk BBQ where they play Sundays and recorded this new album, after-hours. The JazzTimes review of 18th said "The young, Chicago septet is steeped in the music's earliest moments, performing 1920's jazz not only faithfully but perfectly in every way. The interlocking lines, the dazzling piano runs, the cornet blasts and clarinet squiggles and lockstep banjo-it all feels so exciting, so immediate. The Fat Babies are stuck in the past, and hopefully they won't get out." Solid Gassuh features 15 songs including "Doctor Blues", "Alabamy Bound", "Delirium", "Egyptian Ella", "Pencil Papa" and "China Girl".
Toronzo Cannon - The Chicago Way

Chicago born and bred blues guitarist/singer/songwriter Toronzo Cannon keeps the city’s blues flame blazing with The Chicago Way. Playing all self-penned material, Toronzo’s lyrics sting just as hard as his fretwork, and his singing resonates instantly with a gruff soulfulness that begs for repeated listening. From frisky shuffles and hard blues to buttery ballads and funky R&B, Toronzo Cannon blends all flavors of Chicago blues and makes them his own.

Lurrie Bell - Can't Shake This Feeling

Lurrie Bell returns with a new CD he's telling people is his best. It showcases all the passion, depth, rawness and uniqueness that keeps Lurrie at the top of many Real Deal Chicago Blues lists. His ace working band and frequent collaborator Matthew Skoller (on harp) provide the drive and the safety net while Lurrie walks the tightrope vocally and instrumentally. Motivated by his 2013 Blues Music Award for "Song Of The Year" for the title track from Blues In My Soul (Delmark 830), Lurrrie had a hand in writing five of the thirteen tracks. "Driftin'", "One Eyed Woman", "Hold Me Tight", "Sinner's Prayer", "Do You Hear", "Born With The Blues", "Hidden Charms" and more.
Tommy Dorsey - Ultimate Big Band Collection: Tommy Dorsey

The Tommy Dorsey volume in Sony's Masterworks Jazz series is a solid, decent-sounding, budget-priced introduction to this band's hits and best-known numbers during a peak period. Dorsey's band was a dance unit to be sure, and everything here, from its midtempo ballads such as "I'm Gettin' Sentimental Over You," to its slower, bluesy numbers like "After You've Gone," to the ubiquitous "Boogie Woogie," reflects this. For those looking for an introduction to one of swing's premier units, this little set will do you right.
