New Releases Spotlight: Week of January 5, 2015

January 5th, 2015

The first couple weeks in the new year is a perfect time to catch up on the last few releases of the previous year, and maybe get a chance to revisit a gem or two that might have otherwise been missed.  Such is the case with this week’s “New Releases” post to the Music Lounge.

Marshall Vente & Joanie Pallatto - Two Again
First off, WDCB’s own Marshall Vente strikes with the first new release of 2015.  A pianist, composer, and arranger, Marshall has recorded a new album with vocalist Joanie Pallatto which covers a lot of ground.  There are some originals from Marshall’s pen, as well as really nice takes on "Walk On By" and the Beatles’ classic, "Help!"  Other highlights to look forward to include "Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive" and "Straighten Up and Fly Right."

Tom Gullion - Time It Is
Staying close to the local scene, former Chicagoan Tom Gullion has a new disc out called Time It Is.  Tom’s a fantastic saxophonist who’s living near Madison these days.  His disc has some interesting choices, with songs from The Police and The Carpenters, alongside really nice versions of "I Didn’t Know What Time It Was" and "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing."  There are a couple of nice originals too!

Michael Eaton - Individuations
Probably the biggest surprise (in a good way) is the late 2014 release Individuations from Michael Eaton.  It’s a great modern jazz disc with some Middle Eastern rhythmic elements that really make it stand out.  Coupled with Eaton’s fiery playing, this is truly an exciting album, and will get featured mostly during the overnight hours of ‘DCB Jazz, so be sure to stay up late with Matthew.

We’ll be back with more new releases next week in the Music Lounge.
