Hyde Park Jazz Fest!
The 2017 Hyde Park Jazz Festival will celebrate the 100th birthday of Thelonious Monk with four special programs:
a solo concert by award winning Bay Area clarinetist Ben Goldberg; a quartet performance by celebrated Chicago vocalist Dee Alexander and her Monk and the Ladies ensemble featuring Tomeka Reid (cello), Marion Hayden (bass),and Gayellyn McKinney (drums); a two piano Double Monk performance by pianists Jeremy Kahn and Steve Million with dancer Ariane Dolan; and a lecture by critically acclaimed scholar and Monk biographer Robin D.G. Kelley entitled Monk at 100.
In addition to over 30 performances at 11 venues across Hyde Park, the Festival will continue its Story Share Booth collecting stories on the Midway, as well as its Art on the Midway program in collaboration with the Hyde Park Art Center.
This year's performing artists include: Andrew Cyrille and Bill McHenry; Amina Claudine Myers in a rare solo; Jeremy Pelt Quintet including Victor Gould (piano), Vicente Archer (bass), Jonathan Barber (drums), Jacquelene Acevedo (percussion); Joe Locke and Warren Wolf on vibraphone, marimba, and piano at Rockefeller Chapel; Ari Brown Quartet with special guest David Murray; a commission from Nicole Mitchell and Ballake Sissoko: Bamako*Chicago Sound System, co-presented with Chicago World Music Festival; plus Chicago greats including Willie and Bethany Pickens plus Friends; and Maggie & Africa Brown.
