WDCB to add former XM host's “Jammin’ Jazz” show to weekly lineup!
WDCB is pleased to announce the addition of an exciting new weekly program, "Jammin' Jazz - Jazz for the New Generation." The first program will air on Wednesday, January 7 from 10pm to midnight. “Jammin’ Jazz,” hosted by Michelle Sammartino , was among the most popular programs on XM Satellite Radio's "Beyond Jazz" channel from 2001 until the network's merger with Sirius in 2008. This new iteration of the program is being produced by Sammartino exclusively for 90.9fm WDCB – Chicago’s Home for Jazz!
“Jammin' Jazz” will feature all that is cool and groovy on the funkiest edges of modern jazz, emphasizing artists that are currently recording and touring. Jammin’ Jazz celebrates the marriage of jazz with funk, rock, soul, and hip hop - from New Orleans, Chicago, New York and San Francisco to Europe, Japan and beyond. Artists you can hear on the show include Galactic, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Medeski Martin & Wood, Bonerama, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Mocean Worker, Will Bernard, Karl Denson, Dumpstafunk and many more.
Sammartino is elated to revive “Jammin’ Jazz” after a six year hiatus, recasting the program in a whole new dynamic for 2015, exclusively for WDCB. “Jazz is something that reflects the times and this music does that," says Sammartino. "This current wave of artists pay homage and lay new ground. The show is about music that is playful, dark, danceable, intricate, celebratory and worldly… it’s boundless and I’m thrilled WDCB is giving it a platform.”
"I first caught Michelle’s show on XM way back around 2006 and was very impressed," says Dan Bindert, WDCB Station Manager. "Michelle was really onto something nobody else was quite doing. Her show is funky, fun and unmistakably connected to the present day, with a vibe that most jazz stations overlook. But there's depth too - she understands the backstory of this music and how it all fits together. I made a mental note back when I first heard her, that if I was ever putting together a jazz radio dream team, she'd have a spot on it. So, now we're going to make it happen!"
"Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli" (currently airing in this time slot) moves to Sundays at 8pm.
WDCB is “Chicago’s Home for Jazz” and can be heard locally throughout Chicagoland on 90.9FM, via streaming worldwide on www.WDCB.org (and the Tune-In app) as well as in the city of Chicago through cable television on CAN TV42.
