New Releases Spotlight: Week of November 24, 2014

November 24th, 2014

We’re back with another installment of New Releases in the Music Lounge, and this week, we’ve got two legendary drummers and an outstanding organist to talk about…

Louis Hayes & The Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band - Live at Cory Weeds' Cellar Jazz Club
Louis Hayes, of Cannonball Adderley Quintet fame has a new disc out featuring his Cannonball Legacy Band.  Vincent Herring, who is quite the Cannonball scholar in his own right, joins Hayes in this band, and the results are delightful.  This band clearly has Cannonball’s (and Nat’s) repertoire locked and loaded, and the grooves they get percolating on "Sack O’ Woe," "Naturally" or "Dat Dere" are nothing short of fantastic.  If you’re a fan of the classic 60’s Cannonball Adderley Quintet sound, you’ll be in heaven here.

Jeff Hamilton - Great American Songs Through the Years
Jeff Hamilton – an excellent drummer in his own right, has a new album out too.  It’s called Great American Songs Through the Years, and it’s just about the truest album title to come down the pike in a while.  It does a nice job of giving some of these road-worn standards a new reading.  I especially like the arrangement on "Thou Swell," but I think you’ll have no problem picking out a few favorites of your own after you’ve heard it a few times here at WDCB.

Tony Monaco - Furry Slippers
Finally, organist Tony Monaco has a new project out as well.  It’s called Furry Slippers, and it features the same group that was just at the Green Mill this past weekend, with Fareed Haque in the guitar chair.  Never have I heard Monaco play this much funk on a CD.  And it’s also rare to hear Fareed this restrained.  But it’s a welcome sound on both fronts, and the end result is some satisfying listening.  Check out "Speak Low" for some grooving, swinging and slightly more traditional fare, or "Furry Slippers" (the title track) for some serious jazz funk.

Thanks for reading, Thanks for listening and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!  We’ll see you back here next week in the Music Lounge!!
