New Releases Spotlight: Week of June 16, 2014

June 17th, 2014

This week in the music lounge, we’re going to take a look at a couple of vocalists and a fantastic organ trio that we’ve added to the new releases stack here in the last couple of weeks.

Kavita Shah - Visions: Released by Greg Osby’s label (Inner Circle) and featuring a few of the same NYC based musicians that Gretchen Parlato utilizes on her albums, this is a modern jazz record in every sense of the word.  From the Stevie Wonder penned title track to the handful of originals that Shah wrote for the disc, this is without a doubt one of the most intriguing CD’s I’ve listened to so far this year.

Dena DeRose - We Won’t Forget You: Outstanding vocalist and pianist Dena DeRose’s latest is a tribute to the legendary Shirley Horn, and it touches on all aspects of Horn’s career, catching gems from early on and some of Horn’s late period music for Verve in the late 90’s and early 00’s as well.  DeRose has a top notch group with her that really makes this music swing and breathe beautifully.

Larry Goldings Trio - Ramshackle Serenade: Larry Goldings’ long time trio with guitarist Peter Bernstein and drummer Bill Stewart have just released a new disc.  Ramshackle Serenade catches them playing at slow burn tempos, sounding as relaxed as can be.  Standards (like "Sweet and Lovely") and original material (check out "Roach" and "Mr. Meagles") all sound like they’re being played intimately during the last set at a half empty club.  It’s a nice vibe, and we’ll be featuring it a bunch on ‘DCB Jazz.
