Rajiv Halim Quintet plays WDCB's next Fundraising Concert!

October 31st, 2018

On Tuesday, November 13, join us at the Jazz Showcase for a special WDCB fundraising concert with the Rajiv Halim Quintet – as they play a tribute to the legendary Jazz Crusaders. The concert will include two sets – at 8 & 10pm. Tickets are just $10 and the proceeds will support WDCB’s operations.

Rajiv Halim, a 28 year-old Chicago saxophonist, is the leader of an energetic quintet that has wowed audiences on many fronts over the past several years, including WDCB events at The Jazz Showcase and City Winery. Halim’s debut recording “Foundation” has been a deejay and audience favorite on WDCB since the album’s release in 2015. If you’re new to Halim’s music, here’s a video of Halim and his group playing one of his signature tunes, “The Hard Worker.”

As part of the November 13 fundraising concert at The Jazz Showcase, Halim’s quintet will play a tribute to The Jazz Crusaders. The legendary west coast group was known for their unique tenor saxophone/trombome frontline as well as their memorable sound, which skillfully injected elements of ‘60s r&b into their own fresh and powerful style of hard bop jazz. In the ‘70s, the group dropped the “jazz” title from their name as they shifted into a more electric and more commercial but still funky sound that was right in step with its time. Here’s a link to some vintage video of The Jazz Crusaders appearing on Los Angeles television in the early ‘60s, playing one of their early hits “Freedom Sound.”
