Maryann McTeague Keifer
Host of: Ireland Tonight
The oldest of nine children, Maryann was born and spent early years in St. Laurence parish on the south side of Chicago before moving to Oak Lawn. Her father was born in Three Mile House, County Monaghan in his mother’s family house. His father was raised in nearby Ballyleenan, Co. Cavan, and her mother’s family was from Cavan and Limerick. Raised to treasure her Irish heritage, she was quite taken aback, when on her first trip to Ireland, the customs agent at Shannon told her she couldn’t state that her nationality was Irish. She was American. He finally allowed her to write Irish American when he realized she wasn’t buying that she wasn’t Irish. Silly man, of course she was…
She has been married for many years to her college sweetheart and best friend, Tom. She is a mom, a proud grandma and has been a career educator at the junior high and college levels. Her students quickly realized that in order to pass her class, they had to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day and root for the White Sox.
Maryann is also on the Board of Children’s Research Foundation, a totally volunteer organization that has for over 50 years, raised money to fund research in pediatric illnesses and diseases at Comer and Lurie Children’s Hospitals.
Music has always been a major part of her life, and she treasures being able to be a part of the Irish music community in Chicago. She is passionate in keeping Irish and other Celtic music out there for all to enjoy, and to help to support the bands who share their talents and music with us. Hosting IRELAND TONIGHT on WDCB was never on her radar, but has been a perfect way to share her love of the music!
