What's new on WDCB? ...with Paul Abella

September 14th, 2020

Here are some of the albums we’re spinning this week at WDCB…

Bobby Watson - Keepin' It Real

Bobby Watson has brought back the Horizon moniker for his latest album, 'Keepin’ It Real', featuring Josh Evans (or Giveton Gelin) on trumpet, Victor Gould on the piano, Curtis Lundy on bass and Victor Jones on drums, with Watson playing the alto saxophone. The band is swingin’ on a set of originals from Lundy and Watson, plus classics from Charlie Parker (a slowed down version of Mohawk), Donny Hathaway (Someday We’ll All Be Free), and a rarely recorded Miles Davis gem, Flamenco Sketches.

Ryan Cohan - Originations

Chicago pianist/composer Ryan Cohan has a brand new album that touches on Cohan’s Middle-Eastern roots. It’s called 'Originations', and it features Cohan with a star-studded group of local musicians, including saxophonists John Wojciechowski and Geof Bradfield, trumpeter Tito Carillo, bassist James Cammack, drummer Michael Raynor and the Kaia String Quartet, too. It’s a fascinating listen.

Gregory Porter - All Rise

And finally, Gregory Porter’s long awaited new album, 'All Rise', is also getting lots of love on WDCB’s airwaves these days. On this latest album, Porter is front and center, and his songwriting is in the spotlight. Everyone seems to be loving Concorde, Dad Gone Thing, Merry Go Round and Long List of Troubles.
