Donald Harrison, Bill Frisell & Jazzmeia Horn to highlight to 2022 Chicago Jazz Festival!

Saxophonist Donald Harrison, guitarist Bill Frisell and vocalist Jazzmeia Horn are among the mainstage headliners for this year’s Chicago Jazz Festival, taking place September 1 – 4. The City of Chicago released the full schedule today for the fest, which includes associated neighborhood events around the city along with concerts in Chicago’s Millennium Park and at the Chicago Cultural Center. WDCB is a media sponsor for the festival, which is produced by the city’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and programmed by the Jazz Institute of Chicago.

WDCB will again magnify the excitement of jazz fest week by presenting a series of concerts and live broadcasts, including a monthly, free WDCB Night at The Jazz Showcase featuring the Orbert Davis Quintet on Tue, August 30th, plus a live performance and broadcast from the Pianoforte Studios on Wed, August 31 featuring pianist Jahari Stampley.

Neighborhood Concerts

In 2022 DCASE continues to support local venues and Jazz-presenting organizations that offer free, public concerts with the Citywide Jazz Community Funding Program. This program supports performances that take place between August 23 – 31, 2022 leading up to the Chicago Jazz Festival in September and building excitement for Chicago as a destination for Jazz. The venues/organizations selected this year include: The South Side Jazz Coalition, Hungry Brain, Constellation, Sleeping Village, The Birdhouse Inc., Live the Spirit Residency, 51st Street Business Association, Museum of Contemporary Art, Elastic Arts Foundation and The Whistler. Chicago's Saxophone Summit concert honors Charlie Parker's Birthday! Under the direction of Mwata Bowden, who will assemble a multi-generation quartet of saxophonists; Ari Brown; tenor, Mwata Bowden; baritone, Ed Wilkerson; -tenor and the youngest, Fred Jackson on alto. Bassist and drummer, TBD. This ensemble will pull together compositions and 'standards' transcribed for the rich, lush sound of four interwoven saxophones.
