Jazz Community is pleased to be holding their 2nd Annual Fundraiser for the Bill May Jazz Education Fund on Sunday, October 13 at FitzGerald's in Berwyn. The fund is a scholarship program to send promising young jazz musicians to summer jazz camp. Through the generous donations of our fans, in our first two years of offering scholarships, we've been able to help six young jazz musicians intensify their jazz studies. The scholarship recipients will be sitting in with Jazz Community on a couple of tunes. Join us for this special event to support a worthy cause.
Jazz Community is an 18-piece big band playing the music of Count Basie, Stan Kenton, Thad Jones, Duke Ellington and many others. The band was established in 1976 by its late founder and director, trumpet player and music educator, Bill May. The band was originally called the Norridge-Harwood Heights Community Jazz Band, due to the locale of its origin; Bill and most of the original band members were students or alumni of Ridgewood High School, in Norridge, IL. By the late 1970's, the band changed its name to Jazz Community. The band is now led by Bill's sister Marianne May.
