JJA names 2017 Jazz Heroes, including Chicagoan Tomeka Reid!
When the Jazz Journalists Association named its 2017 Jazz Heroes this week, Chicago was represented by cellist/composer Tomeka Reid! In this very elite list (only 26 are named to across the entire country), she is the only jazz cellist, and the only Chicagoan on the list this year. Tomeka moved to Chicago from DC in 2000 to pursue a Masters degree at DePaul University, worked the door at the famed HotHouse, met Nicole Mitchell and joined her Black Earth Ensemble. She has since gone on to develop her reputation as an educator, and has produced her own festival, the Chicago Jazz String Summit. And we know there is MUCH more to come from Tomeka!
