Pritzker Warns of Bleak Winter
COVID-19 is now the third leading cause of death in Illinois. Governor J.B. Pritzker says that scientific models project that by the middle of winter, the average number of deaths reported daily could reach levels four or five times higher than the peak of COVID deaths in the spring. He said, “a risk that grows as hospitals become increasingly filled with patients and as more of our heroic healthcare workers get sick leading to staffing shortages.” But those projections are based on implementing no further mitigations, and the governor announced on Tuesday new restrictions that include shuttering casinos, museums and banquet halls. Pritzker says to save lives, people need to wear a mask and avoid large gatherings.
