Illinois Unemployment Rate Drops
Illinois' unemployment rate for April was higher than in May. Still, Illinois unemployment was up significantly in May compared with the same time last year. Sam Salustro is with the Illinois Department of Employment Security. He says, “as we’re looking through the phases of the Restore Illinois program and industries are reopening, we’re seeing some job growth again. We’re seeing people return to work and subsequently, we’re seeing the unemployment rate drop.” Leisure and hospitality were hit hard by closures. Salustro says jobs are slowly returning to those sectors as the state enters Phase 4 of its reopening plan. Statewide, the May unemployment rate was 14.7% this year compared with three and a half percent last year.
